BSNL EVDO now available in Noida and Allahabad.

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Good news to people who are waiting to grab this connection in Noida and Allahabad.
According to our forum members, BSNL has rolled out EVDO Service in these two cities (Noida and Allahabad) from past few weeks.

Now what we are looking forward is for reviews from users from these cities. So that we can get the clear picture of quality of service and the speeds they are receiving. According to one of our Noida user, BSNL has already sold 4 – 5 units in just few days.

Anyway, if you are from these two cities and get the connection, please do let us know about the service and speeds.

Thanks to our forum members for updating us in this thread.

If BSNL starts EVDO service (be it CDMA 1x or EVDO), please kindly inform us in that thread which helps others like it does in this post.

Use EVDO in Linux for the best user experience.

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Tux EVDOThe post title may sound bit weird, but it’s pretty true. Using any internet connection in linux is a bliss. You will sure love the stabilty of network connection it offers and the speeds that you gain. There are few people who are using EVDO in windows and are facing many issues like frequent disconnections and low speeds. So using EVDO in linux is a great alternate solution for frustrated windows EVDO users.

If you are a kind of internet user who often use Internet just to check mails, read articles and do other online activities like watching youtube video, blogging or social networking, you will feel a great difference when you start using internet in linux. You won’t miss most of the applications that you use in windows. Linux has got loads and loads of software packages available and all for free. Also you won’t miss the windows, because you can install linux in another partition and have multi-boot with GRUB.

You may feel difficult to get started with using linux, but the massive online community is ready to solve all your problems and will help you to get started. If you are new to linux, I will recommend you to get started with Ubuntu Linux, which is free and very user-friendly. And also setting up EVDO in it takes no more than 10 minutes. Read this thread to know how to configure EVDO in Ubuntu linux and few others. I’m not forcing you to switch to linux, but just suggesting you to do it for the good reason. You will also have a proud feeling of using a free opensource and supporting the community.

On-Rental or On-Purchase ?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

As most of you know, there are two options to choose before you purchase the device. One is ”On-Rental” and the another is “On-Purchase”. To know more about the price difference, see this page.

If you choose “On-Rental”, then you will pay little extra every month and if you opt to purchase the device at the beginning, i.e “On-Purchase”, then you will pay low bill every month.

So which plan is best for you? If you are big on pocket, you will go for “On-Purchase”, if not you will go for “On-Rental”. But there is something that you will have to keep in mind. On-Purchase will give you the limited warranty, but whereas On-Rental will give you unlimited warranty. So what’s the advantage?

BSNL EVDO Review from Coimbatore (CDMA EV-DO)

Friday, February 1st, 2008

By: Subash

This review is of BSNL’s CDMA EV-DO (2.4 Mbps) from Coimbatore!

On 30th January 2008 – I have got the EVDO connection, Initially I was in trouble to connect to the drivers on my Vista OS, with the help of BSNL officials at Saibabacolony exchange(COimbatore) I was able to solve the problems. At that time I exchanged my views of BSNL and they mentioned some of the future plans of BSNL.

Key Points

- Till date they have given 150 connections at Coimbatore within a month. So people are ready to experiment the new concepts in telecommunication. They said the response is good.

- BSNL engineers said they are not sure about the capacity of each tower(ie- simultaneous connection from the tower). So if they get complaints they will stop giving the new connection.

- Coimbatore BSNL gets the internet bandwidth from Madurai BSNL.

- Some EVDO people asking the official about why they are not getting connection even they are far from tower (7-8 kms) so the people are not aware of the coverage area

- All the Vista OS people having the driver problem and BSNL officials are solving it by asking the people to come to the Exchange with the laptop. So if anybody has Desktop with Vista – they will be in trouble.

- The main point is:
They are going to install EVDO facility to another 15 towers within 4-5 months.(Now only 2 towers are having this facility). So we will get the EVDO all over India soon.

Coverage

- When I connect the net through EVDO at first time, I was able to get the yellow signal only (ie – CDMA coverage) then within 20 minutes I was able to get the EVDO coverage.

- On 30th January evening at around 9PM I was able to get a high speed around 1 Mbps. Normally I am able to get around 300 to 800 kbps speed.

- I was able to talk with one of my cousin who is in US through Skype along with good quality of video.

BSNL EV-DO Review from Bangalore (CDMA 1x)

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Author: Santhosh

BSNL is about a launch a new kind of internet connectivity that India had never seen before!

This technology will be a boon for people on the move and for those who don’t want a last mile cabling to their houses. So, yes you are right! This is wireless internet connectivity. This is a revolutionary connectivity which people also term it as “Wireless Broadband”

Though BSNL hasn’t launched EV-DO officially, they have started giving out EV-DO devices from September 2007. The EV-DO USB Host is manufactured by ZTE Corporation. As of now, BSNL has not yet established EV-DO network which offers 2.4 Mbps with Rev. 0 and up to 3.1 Mbps with Rev. A, but they have decent coverage of CDMA 1x (CDMA 2000 1xRTT) that offers 144 Kbps and this technology is considered as 2.5G and CDMA EV-DO as 3G Technology. All CDMA EV-DO devices can access CDMA 2000 1xRTT network as a backward compatibility.

Though theoretically EV-DO offers 2.4 to 3.1 Mbps, the speed may vary depending upon how far you stay from the CDMA tower. This applies to CDMA 1x also. In order to achieve good speeds, either you should stay 3 – 5 Kilometers from the tower or your area must have wide open spaces. One can’t get a wide open space in urban places, so at least they have to make sure the tower is nearer to them. I live in a semi-urban place where I have wide open spaces, so fortunately I’m able to get good speeds though the tower is 7 Kilometers away from my home.
