This is my first post in this excellent forum. I got EVDO card yesterday. I'm living in Krishnapur, Kolkata 1.9 KM from the nearest EVDO enabled tower. Overall, I'm not impressed with the speed. torrent speed is averaging on ~12-20 kBps (kiloByte), and the connection is inconsistent, sometimes the orkut page is not opening, gmail is also having difficulty in opening.
I'm using kubuntu 7.10, connection created with wvdial 1.6
I would like to know from people who are from kolkata and using EVDO.
Should I call upon the exchange?

hey frnd all i can say it totaly depends on signal even a 2 cm move can double the speed i wud definately like to know what signal u r getting either evdo or 1x if 1x then the speed is alright but can be improved with minor tweaks plz help u r self by looking the forum for tips and if its evdo signal then what i get is two towers and a speed of 120kBps download speed in idm it can go upto 180kBps so it depends on the signal....

One thing, since I use linux, I don't see those 'bars' 'towers' which I suppose shows in the software given with the cd. So, how can I confirm the signal I get is actually EVDO, not 1.x?

actually i m not now in kolkata i m in suri ,birbhum ,westbengal there i get evdo signal two towers and i havent tested it in garia,kolkata where my home is but for a fact i know that saltlake has evdo tower as such it was told me that in bidhannagar they have tower so depending on that u get the signal and regarding 1x and evdo if the light in evdo machine is green=evdo signal if light orange=1x signal... i hope this helps!!!

Actually EVDO & CDMA 1x both the services are given on EVDO card. Tell me how much you paid per month? Rs. 200 + tax = CDMA 1x & Rs 550 + tax = EVDO. Wich connection you provided. As statement I determine that you have cdma 1x facility archived. so your speed is ok. If not check your dns settings like 218.248.240.179 & 218.248.240.135 which I stated later.
You r using torrent , then u check the bandwidth settings of your torrent.
