Hi,
I was told that EVDO will be available from next month at my exchange (HCU - Hyderabad). I am about 2.2 KMs aerially from the exchange. I have Five questions: 1) If I keep the EVDO card connected to PC in the ground floor of a three story building does it affect the signal strength? 2) Does signal strength determine the speed? 3) How can I connect it to a router to share it across the other PCs at home? 4) Is it worth replacing a DataOne connection with questionable telephone reliability with BSNL EVDO? 5) Last but not the least: Is the speed dedicated per user? i.e., if more users are logged on to the cell/exchange does the speed come down? Thanks. Srikanth |

RE: Does the speed drop with more users
It does not depend on how far u stay from the exchange, it depends on how far the BSNL CDMA tower is near to u.
1) Not really, but if your building is surrounded my other such buildings which is multi-storied will sure affect the signal strength. 2) Sure, two bars will do fine. 3) Haven't tried it. 4) No not all. If you want EVDO to use with ur laptop on the move, then its worthy. Or it is also worthy if you switch from dialup. I doesn't mean the speeds are slow. The speeds will be very good after u get the EVDO signal. But there are probs like port forwarding while downloading torrents. 5. The speed is infact dedicated to per user. But i'm not sure that the speed decreases if more ppl logs in. Regards Gigacore. Please don't PM/Email me regarding any technical query. They will go unread/ignored. Instead do post them in forums. Let others know ur problems too. |

RE: Does the speed drop with more users
3) I was thinking that having a low powered laptop (I have one lying around) running Linux with ICS and connected to a router should do the trick. I was just wondering if anyone tried it!
4) Currently I am on 256 kbps unlimited and my exchange being a rural exchange on the outskirts of Hyderabad the telephone cable is of poor quality. The JTO tells me that there is no intention of upgrading the exchange to an electronic one as they will soon (in a year to two) be switching over to WiMAX for broadband. My broadband SNR margin is 6 which is very low. I have never heard of a cell phone connection being broken or lost. Yes there will be an occasional network congestion etc but the connection itself will not be lost for days together. Considering these facts, I was thinking of going for EVDO when available and try it out along with DataOne for a couple of months and if everything works out fine then I might switch over to EVDO for good. The only problem is getting DataOne back is almost next to impossible considering the long queue at my exchange. 5) Typically they would have n number of connections and they might give out n*5 users. If all n*5 users are connected at the same time then I would think the speed will proportionately get reduced. I am not sure if th n connections is at the exchange level or at the CDMA tower level. |

RE: Does the speed drop with more users
Gigacore Wrote:5. The speed is infact dedicated to per user. But i'm not sure that the speed decreases if more ppl logs in. AFAIK not true. CDMA EV-DO is a nomadic wireless technology, and like all nomadic wireless technologies, the total available Spectrum (to an operator) is fixed, and divided amongst 'N' max. no. of users. If less than max. no. of users are on air at the same time, those on air, would getter larger share of the spectrum, and thus higher thruput. This is true for GPRS, EDGE, CDMA2000 1x, EV-DO ... |

RE: Does the speed drop with more users
I Agree with bDutta, but i believe if there are more number of users connecting to the same BTS, the speed might vary a lot to all the users.

RE: Does the speed drop with more users
As my speeds are great now, so i am only worried about the decrease in speed with the increase in the users. it is my worst night mare, which i would never want should come true.
