How to setup BSNL EVDO in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
It's been a day since Ubuntu 10.04 was released (at the time I wrote this tutorial), and I just couldn't resist to upgrade from 9.10 to the latest 10.04.

I had seen members reporting that configuring BSNL EVDO under Ubuntu 9.10 in Network Manager doesn't let the device to connect to the Internet. Luckily, I didn't face any such issue in 9.10 since I upgraded directly from 9.04 using network upgrade option. But this time I decided not to upgrade using network upgrade since I had messed up the installation for some reasons. So I performed a fresh installation, and I straightaway started to configure internet using the Network Manager, but it failed to connect.

So then I though of a workaround, but found nothing. So instead I opted to go for old school way of connecting to internet and i.e using "wvdial"

So you must install it offline with few other required dependencies which in turn enables wvdial to install and connect to internet.

Here's how:

1. Before doing anything, you must download the required deb packages and the dependencies. You can find it in the attachment below in this thread.

2. After you download it, extract it. Then install all the files by opening them and clicking on "Install Package" in the exactly the same order below:

Quote:libxplc0.3.13
libwvstreams4.4-base
libwvstreams4.4-extras
libuniconf4.4
wvdial_1.60.1+nmu2_i386

Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register in our forum for free by clicking here to see images. Please note that you must install in exact order one after the other, otherwise, the installation fails. And also these files are for x86 or i386 (32 Bit version) of Ubuntu. You can find the 64 bit version of these packages over here: Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register in our forum for free by clicking here to see links.

3. Now to make sure you have installed wvdial successfully, open Terminal and type "wvdial" and hit enter. This should show something like this:

Quote:santhosh@santhosh-desktop:~$ wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid phone number.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid login name.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid password.

This means you have successfully installed wvdial and now you must configure it.

4. Configuring wvdial on 10.04 is easy since you don't have to specify the device id or whatsoever. Follow these steps:

- Type "wvdialconf" without quotes in your terminal and this will detect the available modem connected to your USB port. You must something like this:

Quote:santhosh@santhosh-desktop:~$ wvdialconf
Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.

Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyUSB1<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
WvModem<*1>: Cannot get information for serial port.
ttyUSB2<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyUSB2<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyUSB2<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.

Found a modem on /dev/ttyUSB0.
Modem configuration written to /etc/wvdial.conf.
/etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't write '/etc/wvdial.conf.tmp1848': Permission denied
/etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't write '/etc/wvdial.conf' ('/etc/wvdial.conf'): Bad file descriptor
ttyUSB0<Info>: Speed 9600; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"

The above result says that the modem was found in ttyUSB0 port and that is QUALCOMM INCORPORATED modem.

5. Now that the modem has been successfully detected, you must edit the wvdial.conf file and enter the credentials and make some changes in order to connect to internet.

i) Type "sudo nautilus" without quotes in your Terminal
ii) And open File System and then navigate to "/etc/wvdial.conf"
iii) Open "wvdial.conf" file and enter the details and make changes.

It should look like this:

Quote:[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Baud = 921600
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
ISDN = 0
Phone = #777
Password = 2013xxxx
Username = 2013xxxx

Be sure to enter your Phone as #777 and replace 2013xxxx with your eight digit number provided which is both your username and password. Also remember to uncomment it by removing ";" before it if it was present.

iv) Save and close the file. Close the nautilus by pressing "Ctrl+C" in the terminal.

6. Now to connect to the internet, type "sudo wvdial" without quotes in your terminal.

Should look like this when it is successfully connected:

Quote:santhosh@santhosh-desktop:~$ sudo wvdial
[sudo] password for santhosh:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT#777
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT#777

~[7f]}#@!}!}!} }-}#}%B#}%}'}"}(}"{B~

--> pppd: 3 83

--> pppd: 3 83
--> secondary DNS address 208.67.220.220

That's it! Enjoy! If you have any issues, do post it here. And if you found a way to get it working in Network Manger, write an tutorial in this forum and we will appreciate your effort.

^ Make sure you have properly setup your wvdial.conf file. And also..

--> Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
--> Connected, but carrier signal lost! Retrying...

means your carrier has been detected but the signal is lost. Meaning poor network coverage.

Also, did you uncomment phone, username and password? It should look same as in my tutorial.

Hmm.. It didn't work for me. It used to give some dependency error. Will try again later.

RE: How to setup BSNL EVDO in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
I didn't see this early.. I am using Lucid and zte modem is connected through network manager.. since Imake the settings automatically connect every time open the Lucid it automatically connect and I don't see any problems here that is the reason why 'wvdial' is not included..In network manager 9.10 it is not working where as the bug posted are rectified now..
already posted here but still I repeat it
first plug the modem in the usb slot it will recognise the zte modem..
1) in the mobile broadband Tab click the country as India
2) it will show the Tata, Airtel reliance . But Bsnl is not there.. just type in the other providers Tab as BSNL or anything you like then close it
again open the network manager against the mobile broadband entry your provider name will be there (BSNL) click on it edit it.. phone number as #777 username your bsnluser id, pasword as bsnl password.. click on apply.in the task bar a signalling icon pulsuating there but immediately disconnected.. I plug out the usb modem then logout the desktop..again login insert the USB modem immediately signal pulsuating in the task bar (like our mobile phone) bsnl connected message appear..
further, anyone using Mandriva or pclinux OS ,Unity Linux will find it is dead easy to configure evdo than in Ubuntu

By using Linux, you stand on Free Man's Land, where the'evil steves' afraid to poke their nose!.more on 'Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register in our forum for free by clicking here to see links.
