RE: Roaming
The BSNL EVDO network, operates on the CDMA infrastructure which BSNL has.
Now this CDMA network caters to two kinds of service.
1. CDMA Tarang Mobile:- Its a Black colored CDMA Mobile which can be used only in the city limits and does not have SMS facility. (I used this service way back when we had charges for incoming on GSM mobiles.) And its billing is more or less similar to a Land line.
2. Fixed WLL:- BSNL has been using this CDMA infrastructure to install Fixed WLL wireless Home Phones. Thus saving cost on copper lines.

In short, the CDMA network on which EVDO works has been used only as WLL. Which means Wireless in Local Loop and caters to last mile wireless connection. It is evident that we have CDMA network first at places which were growing. This proves the fact that the primary reason behind this network(when it started in 2002) was to eliminate the necessity of laying cables for new home phone connections.
Few good examples are that Mumbai does not have EVDO yet,Cable lines were already there since starting, so CDMA was not profitable, Chennai had EVDO for outer areas first(may be CDMA was more prominent in outer areas were growth at that time was more.

I am pretty sure that BSNL does not have any CDMA coverage for railway tracks and National highways like they have for their GSM network.

I do hope that some day BSNL provide national roaming for EVDO but it will certainly be a limited prospect(not many places and routes covered by CDMA as of now). Keeping in view, that after the Selling of 3G Spectrum (for GSM), even the GSM will also come up with high speed internet, which will no doubt have much much wider coverage and better roaming facilities. At a higher cost although.

Best Regards
Gaurav

HI,
First of all I donnt have EVDO and I want to buy it. I m a student who study in Ahmedabad and my native is Surat. Would I be able to use it in both places. Would there be any extra charges for that. Also one more question, I m a torrent freak I download tones of applications provided. Currently I m able to get 10 to 15kbps speed from my wireless internet.
